ancient Chinese physicians were supremely concerned with longevity--and
how to enhance it. They were paid only when their clients remained
healthy, and payment was denied if their clients became ill. That certainly gave them incentive to keep their "patients"
healthy! Of supreme
interest to the old Chinese doctors was LIFE ENERGY, which they
called QI (chi). The QI is a kind of
bio-electricity which animates all living cells. When the Qi
is gone, life ends. It is as simple as that. Because QI
was of supreme importance, the Chinese doctors of old developed

or "nurturing life." The
ancient doctors' main interest was in the energetic quality of

nurturing life on how much QI was provided by different
foods and food groups. And they combined their analysis of foods with
their astute knowledge of how to evaluate the level of QI in
human beings of different ages and physical conditions. The
result was a science of nutrition which was based on food ENERGETICS,
precisely tailored to any individual's age, body type, physical activity,
and even spiritual aspiration. Although
the science of Yang Sheng does not use the more modern
scientific analyses of foods, such as fat content, proteins, vitamins,
minerals, it can easily be combined with current scientific
understanding. But,
even after many centuries, the Chinese method does not require any
knowledge of modern nutrition to work. It can easily stand on its own,
just as it has done for hundreds of years. And
